3D FEM model development from 3D optical measurement technique applied to corroded steel bars

    Get PDF
Understanding the mechanical effects of the corrosion pits on the steel surface requires an accurate definition of their geometry and distribution along the rebar. 3D optical measurement technique is used to obtain the outer geometry of artificially corroded bars tested under cyclic or monotonic loads. 3D FEM model development from the 3D scanning results were carried out in order to investigate the failure process and local effects on the pits, which are responsible of the variation of the mechanical properties in corroded steel reinforcement. In addition, a validation of a simplified model, which allows the mechanical steel properties determination given an estimated corrosion level, is presented. 3D models were convenient to observe and measure the local effects on the pits.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

From perception to action and vice versa: a new architecture showing how perception and action can modulate each other simultaneously

Presentado en: 6th European Conference on Mobile Robots (ECMR) Sep 25-27, 2013 Barcelona, SpainArtificial vision systems can not process all the information that they receive from the world in real time because it is highly expensive and inefficient in terms of computational cost. However, inspired by biological perception systems, it is possible to develop an artificial attention model able to select only the relevant part of the scene, as human vision does. From the Automated Planning point of view, a relevant area can be seen as an area where the objects involved in the execution of a plan are located. Thus, the planning system should guide the attention model to track relevant objects. But, at the same time, the perceived objects may constrain or provide new information that could suggest the modification of a current plan. Therefore, a plan that is being executed should be adapted or recomputed taking into account actual information perceived from the world. In this work, we introduce an architecture that creates a symbiosis between the planning and the attention modules of a robotic system, linking visual features with high level behaviours. The architecture is based on the interaction of an oversubscription planner, that produces plans constrained by the information perceived from the vision system, and an object-based attention system, able to focus on the relevant objects of the plan being executed.Spanish MINECO projects TIN2008-06196, TIN2012-38079-C03-03 and TIN2012-38079-C03-02. The use of collaborative publishing tools in Didactics of Experimental Sciences in multicampus universities: The case of the University of Castilla-La Mancha

    Get PDF
The use of collaborative publishing tools, commonly called wikis, provide a wide number of advantages on its application to teaching in Didactics of Experimental Sciences, above all in multicampus Universities. This is the case of the University of Castilla-La Mancha and, in particular, of the Primary Education degree, that is imparted in four different campus: Ciudad Real, Toledo, Albacete and Cuenca. The use of wikis would allow to work, for example, in groups composed by students of different campus, getting through spatial and temporal barriers. Making collaborative works with these characteristics would improve the unification of the existing criteria in aspects like elaborating documentation or designing practical works for the different subjects. Using a collaborative tool like a wiki, implies the possibility of giving lessons of the subjects of the area of Didactics of Experimental Sciences in a more coordinated way, and also to work numerous transversal competences. Wikis also allow to register historical changes in the documents, so it is possible to make a formative assessment as well as an individual one. It is remarkable that the structure of a wiki allows to link these workspaces to others that belong to another disciplines, so it is easy to create multidisciplinary projects. As a result, students don’t study the specific didactics separately, but they work with its interrelationships. And it means not only to work interdisciplinarly in Didactics of Experimental Sciences, but also in other areas

Development and Assessment of the Competence Creativity Applied to Technical Drawing

The results obtained after incorporating the competence “creativity” to the subject Technical Drawing of the first course of the Degree in Forestry, Technical University of Madrid, are presented in this study. At first, learning activities which could serve two functions at the same time -developing students’ creativity and developing other specific competences of the subject- were considered. Besides, changes in the assessment procedure were made and a method which analyzes two aspects of the assessment of the competence creativity was established. On the one hand, the products are evaluated by analyzing the outcomes obtained by students in the essays suggested and by establishing a parameter to assess the creativity expressed in those essays. On the other, an assessment of the student is directly carried out through a psychometric test which has been previously chosen by the team. Moreover, these results can be applied to similar or could be of general applicatio

Structural effects of steel reinforcement corrosion on statically indeterminate reinforced concrete members

The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1617/s11527-016-0836-2Steel corrosion in reinforced concrete structures produces loss of reinforcement area and damage in the surrounding concrete. As a consequence, increases in deflections, crack widths and stresses may take place, as well as a reduction of the bearing capacity, which depends on the structural scheme and redundancy. In this paper an experimental study of twelve statically indeterminate beams subjected to different levels of forced reinforcement corrosion is presented. Different sustained loads were applied during the corrosion phase to assess their influence on the effects of corrosion. An important increase in deflections was registered in all corroded beams, especially in those subject to higher load levels. It was also found that the rate of corrosion was affected by the load level. Internal forces redistributions due to induced damage were measured. Finally, the experimental results were compared with those predicted by a non-linear time-dependent segmental analysis model developed by the authors, obtaining in general good agreement.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
